4+3 shift problem

4+3 shift problem
My 87 Conv. has an intermittent problem with shifting...
Under various conditions, including backing out of a parking place and shifting into 1st. to pull away, downshifting from 3rd. to 2nd. when slowing down (or grabbing a lower gear!!), I cannot shift into either 1st. or 2nd. gear! The shifter seems blocked out of the 1-2 channel. In addition, when this condition occurs and you can "force" it into 1st, if you roll the car forward, or backward, slowly and push the clutch back in, it feels like a brake is dragging....or, perhaps the reverse gear is partially engaged?
I have the car up on stands now and plan to pull the side cover later today. I cannot find anything on the exterior of the tranny, or the shifter (only observing the shifter from the top as I have not yet pulled the console panels off to fully access the shifter), which looks like it may be hanging up.
As I said above, this is an intermittent problem and I have not been able to duplicate it. I also have not been able to get to occur other than when actually driving the car...it hasn't done it sitting in the garage where I can really look at it.
Any info. greatly appreciated.
