Default Hello there!

I just joined the forum yesterday, but have been a corvette owner since my 1st new one in '73.

And I have always done all of my own wrenching...

I have an 87 conv. with a 4+3, which last week began hanging up. that is to say, intermittently it blocks the 1st.-2nd. shift channel. you can get it into reverse, if stopped, but not into 1 or 2.

It happens, after the car is driven a few miles (can't get it to fail when cold) and then, after a couple of trys to get it free, the prob. goes away!

It has happend after backing out of a parking place and also when shifting down from 3rd.

When stopped, after backing out of a parking place and playing with the shifter, trying to get into 1st. a few times, it will finally go in, but when the problem is present, if you pull ahead slowly and then depress the clutch, it feels like a brake is dragging...or the reverse gear is partially engaged?

I cannot see anything external that may be causing it and, after reading some of your posts, wanted to check with you to see if you've seen this one before I tear into it....

Hm.... have you checked your master cylinder for fluid levels? I had a slightly similar issue which was due to failed hydraulics. My first clue was a low cylinder.

yep, fluids are OK...clutch is working fine...

is the reverse shifter rod supposed to have any grommet, spacer, etc. on the end where it goes through the shifter arm on the reverse case?

You're positive you have 100% clutch disengage? I had to put my rear up on jackstands and run the car in 1st with the pedal down. Thats when I saw the rear wheels creeping.

Regardless....

Its been a while since I was under there, but I know the reverse rod is just cotterpinned onto the shifter arm. I don't remember a spacer down there. I may have a picture so I'll take a look.

yeah, when I said I let it creep ahead a little, then push in the clutch...then the car feels like something is dragging it to a stop, like a brake or sompin

this reverse rod is also just cotter-pinned to the shift arm as well...can't tell from the shop manual (GM) if there was sposed to be a grommet and spacer, etc. even went to Cheby and looked at their parts picture which refers to a grommet (discontinued), but ya can't tell where it is used by their picture either.

guess I'm going inside and check the syncros.

then the shifter (God, I hate pulling the interior apart to get to it!)
