Default Sealant for rear diff cover

I have to replace the axle seals and to do this the book says to remove the rear cover on the diff. What do I use to seal it back up? Is there a gasket or do I use RTV? If RTV then what type (Right Stuff, Blue Black, Copper, Red, etc)

Also, does anyone have any tips for this project?

Thanks

Dale

I took a D44 apart recently to check in preparation for installing in my car. It had black on it but I don't know if that was original or not. I'll check my manual and get back if no one answers you first.

Curious... Mine currently has something orangeish - red on it now.

Thanks

GM #1052914, 1052917 or equivalent it says. Doesn't mention color, as I figured it wouldn't but now that you mention it I think I remember seeing the orange on the differential currently in my car.

"The Right Stuff" is the right stuff. I've used to seal two different rears on my car and neither leaked ever a drop. I've also used to seal the intake on my car twice and again they've never leaked.

I've heard of this product, mainly here on the forum, but have never seen or used it. What is different about it compared to regular silicone sealers? I've never had a problem with conventional silicone sealers anyway. In my work I've seen plenty of problems caused by the misuse of silicone though.

I've used "The Right Stuff" on my 90's and my Dad's 86's intakes and it seemed to work well. I wasn't sure how it would work for a rear end tho. If you haven't noticed any problems then I will probably pick up a can from AutoZone. "Stuff" comes in handy anyway. Anybody have other suggestions/waarnings?

Thanks!
