Default Pre-cats or no?

I heard this metallic knocking sound (in the front of the car) which increased with engine rpms. I needed to replace the rear bearing anyway so I ordered them and had my mechanic check the Vette out.

Turns out that the passenger side cat on the front y pipe is bad. I've seen two replacements at Ecklers one with the two pre cats and one without.

Will running a front y without the pre-cats make the Vette louder? It's loud enough as is with the Ansa mufflers. The ads state that the front y with precats is EPA approved but an identical y on another site stated off road use only...what would you guys recommend??

Thanks

Joe

Yes. Definitely louder. I have all my cats empty and at first its really bad. Afert about 6k miles I now like it . If you dont drag race I say put cats back on it. You would not notice the power diffrence on the street. Et diffrence is about .15 with no cats. You can see it on a timeslip but I dont think you can feel it.

I had the two pre cats gutted out for the exact same reason as you, but I left the main cat intact.

It bumped the noise level a bit, but not drastically, I was told the emissions will still be ok.

A front Y without pre-cats along with a 3-stage cat is 49-state (left coast excluded) legal alternative to the stock setup.

You will get a hp gain from going to the new front Y with hi-flow cat.

Also, if you toss the frisbee from the front of your water pump pulley you will get a hp gain.

I went with no precats and the 2 and 1/2 pipe. I also have an aftermarket catco main convertor and flowmaster exahust. The car shounds great. It was a little louder but sound good. For a pieced together system it sounds good. As for picking up any ponies ...maybe a couple. I had no problems withthe emission test in ohio but I don't think they know to look for the precats.

Thanks fellas the new Y is on the way! Ecklers should be shipping it tomorrow

65 thanks for the frisbee reminder, I've seen some of your other posts about it and had forgotten, it's coming off this weekend.
