Default inner tie rod ends

is it possible to have a loose inner tie rod end ?
what is involved in replacing them? do I have to drop the rack?
my car is tracked, and I think they might be getting sloppy.
the outers are nice and tight, and the wheel bearings are tight.

I do have a little movement in both front wheels, hands on 9 and 3oclock... and the only possible location is the rack or inner tie rod ends.

The rack has to come out of the car. A couple of years ago, I failed a safety inspection because of inner tie rod ends. Since the steering had "morning sickness" for years, I just replaced the rack. The inner ends are a part of the rack assembly. The procedure to replace the inner ends, only, is in the service manual.

RACE ON!!!

On my 86, I replaced the left side inner tie rod end with the rack on the car. It just takes the special inner tie rod socket to get it off and back on. If your rack needs other service, then taking it out would probably be best.

The rack has to come out.

If you have any other problems a replacement rack is probably the better way to go.
