Has anyone had problems with the "extreme duty timing chain"? I had one istalled when I did my LT1/LT4 conversion and after sending my Vette to the shop to correct an oil leak (from the timing cover/oil pan area) the mechanic pulled the timing geat out and it showed quie a bit of wear. It had less that 8k miles on it. It is also quite a bit heavier that the stock unit. The mechanic recommended to install an LT4 timing gear and chain set up.
No issues to date with mine. It's heavier so it holds up better
GM sells the chain for extreme duty [read "racing"] use (and the box even says "for off road use only" since there was really no reason to certify it for emissions)

Your mechanic needs to figure out what has caused this excessive wear. The stock LT4 set-up won't solve the problem. Also properly assembled, you should not have had a leak this soon. The best set-up, after your problems are corrected would be a Meziere conversion so you can run a true double roller.

That was my thinking, to see if there was a problem with the original installation that may have caused the wear. The gear teeth that the water pump gear makes contact were worn buy the waterpump gear to the point where the gear teeth were very sharp. I have a different shop doing this work as I was NOT happy with the last shop that did all of my previous work, which is why I had this stinkin' oil leak!!!
I'm seriously looking at the Mez. electric water pump option ( are they expensive?) Does anyone know it the extreme duty timing gear set has the part #'s stamped on them? I noticed the OEM did and the EX duty had some number engraved.

Well, heavier does not always mean stronger or better. Some parts can be treated (like the cryo freezing) to make them stronger. Ummm lead is pretty damn heavy compared to steel, but....
I had no "issues" with mine. I mean it wasn't making strange noises and tha car ran fine. He just noticed the wear when he had it out to fix the DAMN OIL LEAK!!!! oh, sorry guys

Yes, I'm aware of that, perhaps I should have referred to the LT4 Extreme Duty chain as stronger, more resistant to shearing forces, less likely to stretch, etc as compared to an OEM LT1 or LT4 timing chain...

You can do the conversion for little more than an extreme duty set will cost, here's why. You can get the heavy duty Meziere pump for a little over $200 which allows you to use a conventional timing set, Cloyes true double roller, about $75. Let me know if you want and I'll get you part#s and where to buy.

Please, any info on where I can get the Meziere pump and the part #'s would be a big help. I've got the shop waiting for me to decide on the electric pump or a new standard one.
