My glass hatch on my 93 Coupe has begun to rattle rather badly when going over some rough spots in the road. It has 94 K miles on her. I have noticed that on some occasions the "hatch struts" won't open the hatch all the way. Do you think that this could be the cause of my hatch rattle? Or is there something else that I am overlooking? Is there any hatch adjustment, how difficult is it to replace those struts?
Any information will be greatly appreciated....
Its not the gas struts, even though you can get replacements and it makes it nice to open. It sounds like it might be the black plastic valance where the hatch latch goes thru. I had a similar noise on my 91 and it turned out to be the screws were loose that hold the valance in on. I took them out, wrapped some tape on them, and put them back in and the noise was gone, just a thought.
Hmmm, I'll have to check mine - I notice the rattle coming from the hatch area on mine's getting worse lately, and it's much worse when the hatch vent is on, too.. Is this a common problem with these??
My cousin had a good notion the other day when I was visiting and asked to borrow a phillips screwdriver to tighen a noisey screw, put a dab of the light weight lock-tite on it. Hmmmm I thought.
I too have a 1996 collectors edition. The back hatch has begun to make a great deal of noise. I took out the plastic panel, thinking that may be it. It was not. I drove the car slowly with the hatch open. No noise! Sprayed the release hoping it will help. Any ideas?

Over time, the hatch gasket will shrink.
This increases the clearance and requires adjustment at the latch under the plastic trim.
When you reinstall the trim add a dab of black RTV to the screw threads to keep them from loosening.
I had the same issue in my 90, took me forever, but I tracked down the rattle. Try this cheap fix that I did! Rap some black electrical tape around the bottom, not too much though. One of these days I'll plasti dip it for a permanent cure.

I will give this a try. Seems the cheapest way to go.

Seems most of the holes for the screws have become oversized through time. Not sure if adding a washer to the screws may help? The heads pop right through the entry holes. Or new trim?

You can find interior trim screw with large heads.
Paint em black if you need.
The RTV helps you apply tension on the panel and keep it there.
Rather than loosening or busting the panel with too much pressure.
one other thing to consider.... another source of rattling could be coming from your gas cap access panel - with my z51 suspension and the bumps in the roads around here, that panel did not stay firmly held down with those little springs. I had to add Velcro with double sided tape to keep that from bouncing up and down. much better after that.
