Default Little airflow experiment

I recently blew out the wires on my MAF due to a nitrous backfire.

Got a new MAF, everything else is fine.

Before I recall seeing 245 gm/sec on a Datamaster run. THis was with both screens and heat sink removed.

With new unit with screens and heat sink still intact, I got a reading of 195 gm/sec.

Using calculations from fellow forum member Mo Bandy, I see that 245 gm/sec = 453.6 CFM and 195 gm/sec = 361 CFM.

That's a fairly large difference. I'm gonna remove the screens and heat sink on my new one and log some more runs to see what the new MAF will yield for gm/sec @ WOT and compare to what it reads now.

I have...

383 @ 9.3 - 9.5:1
K&N filter with cut lid
Stock MAF (screens and heat sink intact for the moment)
58 mm tb
Super ram
Ported aluminum D port # 113 heads
Comp Cams 222/226 0.464/0.464 (I know very weak cam)
Hooker # 2149 through 2.5" dual exhaust, no cats to 40 series Flowmasters

What kind of gm/sec should I be seeing and what numbers are others getting?

I think the difference is not the actual flow, but what the new MAF is reporting to the computer. Supplying the ECM with lower flow rates for an equivalent RPM/load will result in a less fuel given.

What your seeing is you have messed with the calibration of the MAF by removing the screens. Or in your case, putting them back in.

Its tough to put a value on how far off you are. As I am sure its not a constant correction value across the boards. Probably scewed more at the higher flow values. And maybe 1-2 off down low.

Based on threadsI have read here in the past, I, thought that gutting a MAF could improve airflow by 20%
Your numbers look about that difference. So I was not surprised by them. Are both the old and new MAF the same part number from the same manufacturer?

I'll have to double check on whether they're the same part number or not. I assume they are, since they are both Bosch units.

Hi Ski,

I have a question for you, so you say that if someone removes or puts back the screens on the MAF the computer will get false readings?

I had to buy a new MAF a few weeks ago, but I ran the car with the screens one for a little wile then ended up removing them.

Should I disconnect the battery for a few minutes and reconnect it to let the computer re-adjust itself the to new CFM values coming through the MAF? and should Black corvette do the same with his car?

Absolutly correct. Any difference in air flow as installed on the engine will be on the order of a couple of percent or less. Probably less.
