Default 1985 Heater Core Problem??

I've got a troubling coolant leak on my '85. There is a wet spot on the frame under the blower motor, and it's dripping down under the car around the fuel filter. None of the lines going into the firewall are wet or leaking so my first thought is heater core. But why is there coolant on the "outside" of the firewall? I would have thought that the leak would be inside.

Before I tear everything apart, can anyone confirm that this sounds like heater core? Thanks in advance.

I had the heater core go out in my cavalier... It would spray coolant through the vents when i turned the heater on... I've never had this problem with my vette, but that doens't really sound liek a heater core....

My first thought would be the hot water control valve (which is part of the metal piping that routes along the inner fender liner). I would not expect to see coolant outside the firewall from a heater core leaking - and not drippping on the ground unless there was a hole in the passenger footwell!

when the heater core goes-most all the time you get a puddle on the passenger floor.Something externally-I hope for you. The heater core is a Btch to change.

If the heater core itself is dead, it usually spits white smoke out the vents, the coolant stays liquid under pressure, then evaporates as soon as it leaks out of the core.

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately, I think it is something with the heater core because when I turn on the fan, I get a lot of coolant smell. I think I'm going to need to pull it just to make sure. I don't see any leaking from the hoses or the valve. I was hoping the same thing too.

Oh well, I didn't have anything to do this weekend anyway.
