Default McLeod clutches

Hi all,

l just wanted some feed back on Mcleod clutches, l have been looking at twin plate to replace the standard one, is there and issues l should know before l perchasing? and how good are they? also is there any problems changing to the single mass fly wheel that it comes with?

(1990 L98 6 speed)

Any help would be great.

I have a Street Twin, love it.

It's a little bit of a bear to setup for complete engagement/disengagement, but that's just a matter of getting the right length TO bearing and getting an adjustable ball stud.

At least that's what I needed with the 4+3. The 6 speed may be a little different.

The hydraulic TO bearing is not necessary, IMO.

Don't know about the change to single mass flywheel, although, the rotating mass of the clutch itself wieghs more than stock, and with the single mass FW so you're probably going to get a pronounced "rattle" at idle with the clutch released.

I put about 10k miles on it running a 150+ shot on a basically stock L98. Loved to squeeze it in 3rd gear around 2500 rpm or so, no slippage apparent whatsoever no matter how many launches you do....My driving style is to use the clutch as a torque converter while moving and as a traction control device when launching. Both techniques are obviously hard on clutches. I pulled the Mcleod clutch at 10k and it was about halfway worn down. Just about what I expected.

If you switch to a single mass flywheel like a Fidanza aluminum the motor will have to be internally balanced - What this meant for me is that the crank has to be sent off and balanced for $400 for me to use the fidanza flywheel ...

I have the Mcleod street twin as well, came with conversion to single mass flywheel (I choose regular flywheel instead of lightweight to keep rotating inertia).

Most of the Mcleod Vette flywheel / clutch kits come as a set. You do not have to perform any other balancing to install them beyond the small custom work suggest by Mcleod (ie. grind pivot ball).

I believe you can order the clutch set as a balanced set or unbalanced depending on your motor requirements. With the unbalanced set you'll most likely have to send the setup out to be balanced. For most Vettes the regular type will install without problems.

Drivability is great on the Mcleod, very usable and plenty of grip. I didn't have much of a learning curve and it is much lighter in push then some of the other cluthes I've used. I don't have much chatter switching to the single mass flywheel but it may vary depending on the install.

Go for it if you can.

Thanks for the feed back so far.

l do plan on getting the heavy fly wheel to keep some weight, not sure if l should get the balanced set or unbalanced, l know that the twin mass has been balanced but is that to the motor or just to it own rotating assembly.
