Default 8 rib belt conversion???

1986 355 tpi with 8 lbs intercooled P600B ATI. How much does it cost
to convert to 8 rib belt conversion? How much does it reduce belt
slippage? How much boost do you pick up? Does it justify the cost of
the conversion?
How much more boost do you pick up with a cogged belt set up and how much does this conversion cost? Thanks!!!

with a cog you get allot more boost because i like to call it real time boost. with my 6 rib i see about 11psi at 58-6000rpm! i have not found a place to buy a cog for a 1991 vette but i keep looking! but with a cog no slippage so you see boost much ealier!

I've done the 8-rib conversion on my LT1 from ASP.

It's pricey, ~ $1000-$1200 USD depending how you get the setup. Maybe less for the ATI since my Vortech install required a modified bracket to be installed.

Is it worth it? Depends on how important you think consistant boost is. The 8-rib helps to reduce the amount of slip you see and the ease of changing belts less frequently.

Does it make more boost? Only if you change the pulley sizes. Same pulley from 6-rib to 8-rib will not make a difference in HP or boost unless you have slippage problems.

Cog vs. 8-Rib? Depends on how severe your setup is. For most installs I recommend the 8-rib. It has a little give and slips when the blower is put under too much strain (Ie. when you get off the throttle hard). With a Cog drive, you will have no slip problems but if you're too agressive and you're blower isn't the right type you will break teeth off the cog. I suggest 8-rib for 6-12PSI and COG if you want 12PSI+, just my opinion.

P.S. I don't believe anyone is making Cog setups for our cars yet, all the sets I've seen are custom made so plan on spending some real $$$ if you want to go that route.

ASP will apparently do a cog setup, though they recommend against it because they don't think the damper will take it. But others have suggested getting the bonding redone by Damper Dudes first.

Personally, I'm running a 6-rib with 7/2.75 and an UltraGrip pulley and it works fine: 11psi at 5800 into a free flowing 396.

I think its critical that the belt be tight. Vortech supplies a 51" for my car stock, and I did a lot better with a 50.5", and with the smaller pulley, a 50.0"

Life would be a lot simpler if we could just run a 10-rib and be done with it through
