Temest, that exactly the type of reply I was looking for! I seem to remember nathan plemens saying that he prefered not to use platinum... but I couldnt really remember why... then there are those that say get platinum... I think I will get copper. Im all about keeping running cost down. Things break too often as it is!
AC Delco, there has been several posts about the platinums being junk, along with some of the other more expensive type of plugs. Some have reported pellets coming off. And I've heard from other vette owners their cars even seem to run better with AC's-that's what I run and I'm very satified with them. As far as cut back plugs, I understand it's a waste of time, unless you're running in the 5000 RPM range.
Like almost every replacement or aftermarket part... it's all about personal preference.
I've been using Bosch platinum plugs in all my cars(12) since 1986 with great results (smoother idle, better gas mileage) and no problems. So I stick with them. Others are happy with copper and stick with them.
Would I try to talk anyone out of such plugs, no but I always use standard copper core plugs for my street and race applications. The main reason that manufacturers use exotic metal plugs is because the tips don't wear as fast thus getting them thru their long federally mandated emissions warranty periods. Technically copper is a better conductor of electricity. I have never seen consistant documented scientific proof of better performance of these expensive plugs and I would rather change plugs that eventually get contaminated more often anyway. Unlike many that got sucked into marketing hype such as the SplitFire plugs, I will go just as fast for less.
I just put Bosch Platinum's in my 94 LT1- as mentioned above- Its a preference as to plug type (just like oil) I have used these plugs on every car I changed plugs on and have never had an issue...they were like $1.50 each....
Its also a good idea to use good wires, and good coil...keep the spark clean and consistant and plugs are plugs! Just my 2 cents!
