An A4 uses the TV cable to control line pressure for part throttle shift points. The other two cables are throttle and cruise.
If your 4+3 has three cables the third may have something to do with the OD, but is not a TV cable.

Jim, the '84 and '85 4+3 vehicles do have a TV cable. It goes directly to the overdrive unit for the kickdown effect. The later 86-88 units went to full electronic control.
If you remove that cable you'll no longer get the overdrive kickdowns.
