Default Headlight Dimmer Switch

Can anyone tell me how to replace the headlight dimmer switch? I was told that the steering wheel had to be removed, There is no click when you pull the lever and the headlights stay on low beam. I got a Chiltons Repair Manual but it does not have anything in it for that. Thanks

I dont have the direct answer to your question but I too have your problem. I have put it on the back burner for now only because I figured out with mine that I could tilt the steering wheel all the way up and then it would click to bright and will click to dim without doing so. So, since it will quickly dim for an oncoming car without tilting and then I just have to tilt the wheel up to re-bright, rather than disableing the air bag and tearing into the steering column, I have learned to live with the minor inconvenience for now.

You may want to see if this will work for you to buy some time. Good luck.

Default Dimmer Switch

Tried using it with the steering wheel all the way up and all the way down. still would not work. I am going to have to try and figure out how to fix it as where I live there are a lot of Deer out at night so I really have to have high beams.

I guess I'm lucky then. I was hoping this could be a common as looking at my 1990 GM service manual it looks to be quite a can of worms to open. Before you rip into it you may want to be sure that the multiuse lever/dimmer switch is still available from GM. I know this is blasphemy but this is one repair that I may leave to the hands of Mr. Goodwrench if mine gets where yours is at. The manual is confusing at best and as far as I can tell you basically have to break down the whole steering column to get at and replace the switch. This regretably involves disableing and removing the airbag, removing steering wheel, and the ignition assembly, steering lock and tilt, and the list goes on and on with all the little pins and rods and clips and such.

I hear you on the deer thing. I live in the piney woods of east Tex myself.

Anyways, being that yours is a 93 you may want to find a 93 service manual before tackeling this project. I can email you a scan or two from my 90 GM manual if you like but it may have differences with the 93 and it will be later tonight as I'm fixing to head out to work. Just let me know and good luck.

My 93 is the same, no click at all. I was told this switch is down the column a ways and actuated by a rod, you need to unplug the airbag wiring (yellow wires I think). Then supposedly slide the switch up towards the wheel to get it to properly engage and tighten, I had not heard of removing the wheel I don't want to mess with that. I'd also like to hear if anyone has fixed this themselves.

One thing I do know for sure is you need to be absolutely sure to remove the airbag fuse in fuse panel before unhooking any yellow wires or tampering with airbag in any way or you'll end up with a face full of blown bag.
