When I go to work the other day I happened to touch the center console exactly where it says "apply brake to shift from park" (or something like that...) and it was pretty hot is this normal for a auto to get pretty warm in that area? just never noticed it before.

I've had 2 C4's and both the 84 and 90 get a warm console. I think most do. 
Dont worry if it's just warm. Now if by "pretty hot" you mean it's too hot to hold sensitive skin against then that could be a problem. Warm is normal though.
