A friend of mine just had his headers powder coated and looks very nice, the guy that did them said he should get many years of looking good out of them. I was thinking of getting mine done it cost less than having them ceramic coated. Has anyone had this done if so how is the finish holding up. I don't want to spend less and get less!
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO THIS! headers get hot enough to make the powder coat a liquid again. your friends just did something tht will last for maybe a month. ceramic coating is the only durable finish you can use. They say they have powdercoast tht will endure extreme heat, butthey dont work. trust me.
powder coating is bad news
I worked at a manufacturing facility where I had access to a full powder coat paintline with dupont powder and everything top of the line. I had heard that powdercoating headers was awesome so I powdercoated probably nine or ten motorcycle headers for my friends along with a bunch of wheels. The headers looked awesome until the engine was started and the powder coat burned off. nasty, nasty, nasty! Works great for wheels though. yeah I had a bunch of people ticked off - you live and you learn
Melting point for powder coating is about 230C (446F) so like others said its toast pretty soon. It doesnt even last on brake calipers and they run pretty much cooler than headers.
What everybody has told you is true. Powdercoating is great for engine brackets and most underhood parts, but headers will eat it before you reach the end of the street. Ceramic is an entirely different process. I agree with the above. DON'T DO IT.
