l have just reasently perchased a 1990 L98, and was wondering what are some of the low cost modifications l can perform to extract a few more horse power out of the stock engine.
l do plan on a full rebuild when the funds allow, but the engine has just had a full stock reco before l brought it so it seams a shame to pull it apart until it has a few miles on it.
on this site in the tech tips section there are some free mods you can do... They wont give you that big of an increase in HP, but its a good place to start, and it'll help you learn your car a little.
hi, well i have a 91 and i started with remove frisbe, adjust fuel reg, a good exhaust since either way you go you will need one,k&n air filter, you can play with the timing alittle, do you do a full tune up, plugs ,wires, fuel filter, cap and rotor. coolant bypass i don't no what it gains if any heat keeps the heat out of the throttle body.
Exhaust mods, although not cheap, will give great gains on a stock L98.
I totally agree. I have a stock motor with only a few "free mods", but my exhaust is totally redone. I have a 2.5" catless front-Y, random tech cat, flowmaster cat-back and the performance difference was significant. I've heard many forum members comment on how restrictive the L98 exhaust is, but still kept my expectations low. Not only did I get better flow and performance in the mid and upper RPMs, but also got better torque in the low end as well. On top of all this, it sounds awesome, too.
Price wasn't too bad, either. I admit that if I had engine mods on my list I would have bit the bullet and got LT headers. But the issue there is that emmisions testing will be tough (if not impossible in PA), and the price wouldn't have been so inexpensive.
Parts were $800 and labor about $300. Best $1100 I've ever spent
