Default O2 Sensor Stuck. CRAP!

Okay. L98 with about 106K. I'm changing out the O2 sensor to try to fix the lobing idle. I got the stock one off in 2 pieces (pigtail, upper piece), but the (pickup???) piece is still in the A.I.R. tube (Guess that's what that thing is). It's at such an angle that it's really hard to get a socket over the thing. Was gonna pull out that A.I.R. tube (Guess that's what that thing is???) but I think one of the Torx () bolts is shearing.

Right now I've got everything sprayed down with WD40.

I'll get the thing, I just had to come inside before something got thrown!

Instead of WD40 try some PB Blaster on rusted bolts and such. Leave it on over night, hit it again the next day and you should be ok.

If a socket won't fit, try a 6-pt box or open end wrench.

I don't know what you are wrenching on, but the O2 is screwed in to a bung in the exhaust pipe. Nowhere near an AIR tube (on my car) nor any Torx bolts.

RACE ON!!!

Well, I got me a new O2 sensor, and I'm gonna put it somewhere!

Is that bung on the drivers- or pass-side manifold?

Also--- any idea on what I tore apart :o ??? It's on a tube coming up from the exhaust manifold on the pass side. Some kind of sensor that has the same pigtail as the new O2 sensor. Car runs no different without it.
BTW--- I'm doing this on a cold engine...

TIA

I changed mine a few weeks ago, it's screwed into the exhaust Y-Pipe. It took a little muscle to get loose. Used anti-sieze on the new one.

Not sure if your '89 is the same, but on my '87 it's on the driver side, about 6" or so down from where the pipe goes into the exhaust manifold.

If you are working on the passenger side at the tube that wraps up over the valve cover you are working on the EGR temp switch. The O2 sensor is in the Y-pipe on the drivers side. If you look down from the drivers side wheel you will be able to see it. Hope this helps. Tim

In my experience they are MUCH easier to get out of the engine is warmed up and the pipe is warm (not hot) to the touch.

I just replaced my O2 sensor on my '89 yesterday. If you open the hood and look down at the exhaust manifold on the driver side, you'll see the end of it sticking out towards the firewall, just below the flange where the exhaust manifold connects to the downtube with the precats.

I removed mine from the topside, it appeared it would be more difficult from the bottom. The wire from the O2 sensor went to a little plastic clip mounted near the oil filter, I was able to pop that off from the underside of the car, but it turns out you could actually unclip it--I was just going by feel, though, and couldn't figure out how to unclip it by feel.

Anyway, I started putting the new one in from the underside of the car, as you can get a good view of the bung there. Then I tightened it up from the topside again.

As for clearing up my rough warm idle, I'm not sure. I took it for a 10 minute trip down the highway, and the car still felt a bit lean at part throttle. When I stopped to turn the car around, it was still idling bad . But, when I got home, it seemed a bit better at idle--maybe the ECM tables were starting to fill with better data? I don't have a very good handle on the fuel injection system yet :-/

Good luck!

Ben

Okay. Cooler heads DO prevail!

Changed out the O2 sensor... Thanks, all!...

Once I FOUND it (in front of my face :o ), I jacked the car up, pulled it (it was only about finger-tight ), & replaced it.

The other thingie (EGR temp switch), I'm just gonna repair ( ) & stick back in.

We'll see if this fixes the idle....

Warm the exhaust pipe up a bit by running the engine prior to attempting O2 removal. Not hot, but close to being hot. makes them come loose easier.

You might as well replace the EGR switch now, but it's easier to splice the new one into the old wiring because the switch is plugged in down behind the distributor. They are often the cause of a EGR code and they're cheap.

I didn't need to warm up the car-the 02 sensor was pretty easy to remove. But I see you've already done that.
