defective fuel pump symptoms
The reason I ask is my 85 runs like crap on the highway. Idles and accelerates great, but as soon as it shifts into overdrive, it misses. It's an intermittent problem. When I put the car away last winter, it was doing the same thing. When I got it out this spring it ran great for at least the first month. There are no codes.
Is it possible to have a defective fuel pump that still works? What would be possible symptoms if there can be. Seemed last year that it ran better with a full tank. Maybe it's my imagination. looking for ideas. Chevrolet put a fuel filter and an O2 sensor in with no positive results. Wires and plugs only 3K old.

I just replace one and it was doing the same, First i did a good tune up,And on the highway miss for about two week and i was about a mile from home doing about 30mph and it quit. you can run a presure check but sometime you will get a good reading if its not dead.but that was just my problem!
Try replacing the filter sock in the tank. Haven't done it myself yet but read that it's easy. If you run better on a full tank, it could be the sock is blocked up with crud on the lower half.

Talk about intermittent. Yesterday after a about a one hr ride and my ride running lousy, I started this thread. This morning I'm out doing some errands and the car ran great the whole time. What gives?
Don't let that fool you! I've had the same problem. It died last year and needed a fuel pump and then again this year!! Now I'm experiencing the same symptoms, I put a pressure gauge on it and found at idle pressure was great, when I stepped on it the pressure drops way down! Now I don't know what to do? How does it start? If it cranks a while this is also a symptom of a dying pumpt!
