This past Saturday while doing laps in my 88 roadster (driving it real hard) I had a very large cloud of blue smoke out the rear of my car. This was at the end of WOT and a long straight away. I thought I had an oil leak and oil had landed on the exhaust but after some investigation I couldn’t find one and the oil level was NOT noticeably lower! I have never had an oil leak and have never seen a puddle of anything but water from the AC condenser. Someone at the track said that its possible there is a build up in the throttle body of oil and when you let off of the gas it is consumed by the engine. Can someone tell me what happened? I just took the car to Carlisle and back, I drive it hard around town and have never seen this happen before?
I have seen this happen on the track... esp. the tracks with longer straights. I have seen it on stock as well as race-prep cars C2, C3 C4 (even ZR1) and C5 z06. I don't know what it means or if it's bad, but the owners of these cars aren't exactly freaking out after they run them. How much smoke are you talking? If it's just a puff (ie: not a continuous cloud of smoke) than it is likely that your car is doing the same thing that I have seen many others do.
I'm 90% sure it's from the exhaust but no one was following me and I couldn't tell. When I did take a close look under the hood I couldn't see ANY leaks anywhere and I have never seen a puddle of anything under the car. (except water from the AC condensor)
In my case the oil leak was very hard to see but under prolonged hard acceleration there was a cloud of smoke behind. The oil had leaked onto the front Y and burned off.
Typical leaking spots on an L98 are:
-front or real engine land under intake base
-oil pressure sender or switch behind intake base, next to dist
-oil temp sender under engine near oil filter
-oil pan gasket
-rear main seal (remove tranny inspection plate to check here)
Also, when I had leaking oil burning off the exhaust pipes on a long hard pull the entire rear facia would become covered with a oily residue. I don't think this would happen if the engine were simply burning oil and blowing smoke out the tail pipes.
Thanks 65Z01, I have to get it in the air and look into this further. Luckily that was the last track day for this year! Now it's more sedate driving. I'm really hoping for a leak someplace. and an easy fix!!!!!!
PS reall enjoyed your web site, I have gone back more than a few times for advice. I have only been a forum member since Feb. but I have been reading it for over two years while looking for my first vette.
