I have a problem where my wipers chatter as they go across the glass. I have tried cleaning the glass and replacing the wipers, but the wipers still skip over the glass. Could this be weak pull springs on the arms? It is real annoying!!
Make sure the wiper blade is perpendicular to the windshield surface, if not, gently twist the wiper arm until the blade sits at a 90 degree to the windshield.
I've had problems with wiper chatter for years and tried every suggestion but, another corvette forum member suggested this method and the wipers are finally quiet!
I agree with GKK, the wiper is not flipping over so that is drags but rather it is pushing like a blade and it starts to chatter. I don't think I made it clear, but the wiper blade should flip back and forth as it changes direction. Until it does, you will get chatter.
in addition to agreeing with the comments above, another thing that will cause this is a worn wiper mechanism (either the motor or the armatures). the "slop" just promotes the chattering.
another thing i have noticed on my 92 is that my windshield is a lot rougher than late models. i took my wiper blade off of the Corvette, manually dragged it across the windshield, then took it over to my wife's Trailblazer and while it drags on my windshield, it glides over the Trailblazer's. i don't know if this is from wear or due to the glass itself, but it is a noticeable difference. to follow this logic, i think stronger arm springs will make the problem worse as it presses the blades harder on the glass, further increasing drag.
after playing around with different blade inserts, rainX, washer fluids, and glass cleansers, what did the trick for me was Teflon blade inserts (just the rubber) from NAPA installed on my original blades. it still chatters a bit, but it's not so bad that it will crash in midair like it used to. (i already had the 96 wiper arms which are reported to help the problem as well.)
i think you'll have to check the entire wiper system (motor, blades, inserts) to figure out exactly what the cause (or causes) of the chatter is.
Chatter is gone!! Had the car out Saturday and it rained and I was about to go crazy over the chattering. I stopped at a chevy dealer and got the GM blades. Quiet as a dead church mouse.
In my experience, RainX only made the chattering worse (on the Vette). On my wife's Jetta, RainX + wipers = a marvel of water shedding ability. On the Vette...
