An electric pump does take HP. Nothing is free. It takes less HP since it turns at a constant speed regardless of the engine speed. Since it turns at a constant speed, the impeller can be made to be most efficient at that speed. Dyno test have shown that it provides 8-12HP gain depending on the engine RPM. It runs at an equivalent 4500-4800RPM standard water pump output. If you do lots of 4500RPM driving, it would run short of capacity after awhile.
There is a tech tip on how to install it. You'll need to pull the pump housing completely to install it. Not difficult, just a bit awkward getting to a couple of the bolts. First time is about a 3-5 hour job.
