My Corvette just stopped cranking! Changed the starter and battery as simple fixes, but no results. The starter won't crank when I turn the key. Neutral safety switch seems ok. Where do I go from here. I'm thinking it may be the security system may have it locked out, but how do I check it? Also, where can I gat a wiring diagram. It is a 1990 automatic. I'd like to drive it again. Please help.
If the security system is acting up, the light that says "Security" at the far left bottom corner of the gauge cluster will stay on, and won't blink. If this is the case... shut the door, lock the door manually with the door key, then manually unlock it. The light will flash again and you're good to go.
I had the same on my 90 vett, I took it to a guy that work on vette only, He ran the code and said it was my vats, charge me $ 60.00. I myself been working on car a long time. He did the key in the door and everything. My problem it would start but you never new when. So i ghange out lock cylinder ran the vats wire down column that not what was wrong same problem, but everything i am tell you good be. Next i new it was in the anti-theft system. The vats system it self, If you try to start it and it won't do anything you got to wait 3 min before trying again if you don't you will have to wait 6 min and so on. The theft light got to be blinking before it will start. So i took the door apart the door lock have got to work, Work all under dash checking. So i looking at the manual it talk about ground wires. So i took it down to a friend of mind and drove it up on the rack to check the ground wires i could not get to from the top its got a lot of grounds. Under the car on the left side of the motor by the trans there is about 4-5- wires bolted to the motor, They were tight bot i clean them with brake cleaner never had a problem again. just go to show you how you over look something so simple.

First, you can get the wiring diagram in the factory service manual which is highly reccomended. You say tht the neutral safety switch seems ok, does that mean when you try to start it, there is power at the safety switch?? If that is the case, the VATS system is not your problem, assuming that it works like an 86. The power to start goes from the key to a starter enable relay to the safety switch to the starter solenoid. If the VATS does not detect the right resistance in your key, it will not enable the starter enable relay and thats where the chain of power stops.
To trouble shoot this, you can trace power back along that path and see where it stops. Another thing you can do is to temporarily bypass the resistor by jumping the wires under the dash at the base of the column with a resistor of the appropriate value. The computer is supposed to give you a code if it senses an incorrect value of resistance, but reality is that it does not do this all the time.
