I have a 84 with 54k on the clock and I am going to be rebuilding the top end and this is what I am thinking about.
L79 non roller Cam 222/222 .447/.447 with 1.5 rockers 114 LSA
I plan on using 1.6s so my lift will be .477/.477 - I realize this is small by todays standards but I think it will work well.
(any recommendations on a better cam would be appreciated - non roller)
AFR 180 Heads
Hedman Elite Ceramic Coated Headers with Air tubes
Flowmaster 50's
XRam and 2 inch TBs
I figure my cr should be about 9.7:1 or so depending on the head gasket I use.
I am just looking for a little feedback from those who are wiser than me.
The motor is basically stock. I do have 1.6 roller tipped rockers, stock exhaust but flowmaster 50's. The best I have been able to coax is 14.5 @ 92.7 mph. This was with the rockers and a ported xfire manifold and ADS chip. I spent last friday evening at the strip basically testing. I tested the Hypertech Thermomaster, ADS and stock chips with the XRam. My best ET was 14.7 @ 94.8 it was also a warm evening. I also did not heat up the tires as I did when I ran the 14.5 about a year ago. Anyway, the HT and ADS chip netted a .2 to .3 increase in ET and the stock ran 15.0 twice.
For those of you interested in the XRam, it is basically for a motor that has some modifications. If you just bolt it on a stock motor don't expect that much. But this is what I wanted to find out. The price is a bit steep for a new unit - approx $450. Luckily for my I purchased one used - $225 so I considered it worth it.
Anyway, the HT and ADS chip netted a .2 to .3 increase in ET and the stock ran 15.0 twice.
Increase in ET as in slower? I tried a Hypertech Thermomaster chip, years back and it slowed me down by about .050. That was before my manifold work.
It sounds like your's is running pretty good. Mine has 160,000 miles and the long block is untouched. It sounds as though our cars are fairly evenly matched on the track. I am familiar with the X-Ram, but I'm yet to be convinced it is any better than my ported stocker. Keep us up to speed on the project.
