Default D44 drain plug location

Before I install the 44 in my car, I'm adding a drain plug. The cover is off so obviously I'll be able to see exactly where I'll be drilling. It looks to me that just left of center, which is the lowest part of the housing and about 2" forward or so from the mating surface for the cover. I'm sure others have done this with the differential out and just wanted to get your thoughts and opinions. I don't want to weaken the structual integrity of the housing. Also thought that 1/4" pipe would be about right and I can't find a magnetic plug that small so I'll make my own. Thanks in advance for your input.

Just did this to my Vette. Although my Rearend was in the car which made it more difficult to do. But at least you know where the plug should be to gain easy acces to it.
The plug is very close to the passenger side rear exhaust pipe.
Corvette Fever November 1998 on page 36 has the article on how to do this mod.
Drill a 1/4 inch hole to the left of the center cover bolt about 1/4 -1/2 inch away from the bolt. Then go to a larger 5/16 inch drill bit. ( by the way measure 3/4 inch from the front cover in before drilling.).
Then tap with 1/8 inch NPT tap. The article says to use an aluminum 1/8th inch tapered plug.
I could not find one, so I used a brass plug with teflon tape on the threads.

I'm assuming when you said front cover you meant rear cover, the bat wing. I guess you're talking about drilling into the thicker area closer to the rear of the main housing and I suppose that makes more sense as it would be stronger there. If I drill there I can see why they would recommend only 1/8" pipe as that flanged area encompassing the perimeter of the rear opening is only 1" in from the mating surface. Any other thoughts anyone? Thanks grandspt.

You assumed right about the cover.
If you have the Corvette Fever Article it shows you how to do the mod.
I can scan it but I don't know how to post it!

But Tom, that would involve spending money! And for something I already have everything I need to do. We're not all independently wealthy, retired playboys like you!
