Water Pump question
Okay, I got the water pump off. How do you tell if those things are bad or not? I pulled the back cover off, the little impeller spins just fine, its a little rusty in there, but nothing seems to be clogged or what-not. What is it that makes those things go bad? I am seriously wondering if one of the gaskets around the water pump was leaking causing my symptoms..ie. tons of coolant leaking from the front of the engine. It may have just been a hose connection as well. But, since I got the thing off, I'm gonna replace it. It there anything else I should do while i'm down there? That timing chain looks pretty acessible from there.

The Culprit on my water pump was the bearings on the shaft that goes into the cam had disappeared. Under preassure the coolant is forced past the bushings in the pump and escapes out the weep hole.

If time is not a factor, might I suggest an upgrade to an electrical coolant pump by Meziere? Lots of reasons to go this route.
Where the OEM pumps go bad is at the bearing/seal. To tell if it is bad, look at the weep hole and see if you see any evidence of leakage. That's where it all begins. Oh, don't just replace it with a cheap rebuilt pump, go with an all new AC Delco. Believe me after you get it back together, I doubt very much that you'll want to replace it again very soon.

My weep hole seems pretty dry. (man, take that out of context and it sounds really creepy!) 
Anyway, i guess there is no way to tell if I'm leaking around the bearings. I'll definitely replace it with ac-delco. Now, about that timing chain...how involved is that? I havent even looked into it or done a search as I thought I'd never get near it. I dont have a timing light...
Oh, by the way, I have a '90 coupe. I dont think mine is attached to any cam. It seems to run off the pulley? I suppose I should ditch the frisbee while its off.
