Default Digital Dash Repair "Consumer Warning"

Ok guys. this is my opinion on an experience I have had with a company, so take it of leave it, but please feel free to reply about your experiences (both good and bad.)

Four months ago, I sent my digital cluster in to Bob Perkins of Advanced Electronics in AZ. He repaired my dash and sent it back and it didn't work. I sent it back to him at my expense. He sent it back to me and it still didn't work. I, thinking that it was a problem with my car's wiring and not the dash spent four months and lots of money (including a 30 dollar call to Gordon Killebrew) trying to fix it. All to no avail. I finally took the car to a mechanic I know and he said there was nothing wrong with the car wiring. He got my permission to send the cluster to a place in dallas to have it tested. They said there was definitely something wrong with the cluster and that as a matter of fact it was a horrid job of repairing. They said there were burnt sauters and bad connections. They said that one of the circuit boards were trashed. Mr. Perkins stated that he knows how to repair a dash and that in a 20 year old piece of electronics there might be something missed. That's all fine but I know that when I have something restored I don't want him to just fix what looks like it needs to be fixed, but restore it to factory specs. So I just tell you to beware.

I had a good experience with this guy! $225 and he repaired my power supply, checked and redid some solder joints and went over and improved the contact connections. Turn around 1 week

The place in Dallas is Autocraft. I highly recommend them. They aren't the cheapest (like 385?) but they do a good job, and they are the only place in North Texas that is GM certified.

I did ask for my money back....He stated that I voided the warranty. But I let him know that I'd let all of my vette friends know what his service is like.

I appreciate the heads up. There's a lot of crappy work that get's passed off asquality & we pay top dollar for it. This forum is a great place to "out" the companies that do bad work.

Thanks.

The bad thing is.....I paid him on Paypal, but didn't use Ebay. Ebay/Paypal will probably do nothing for me, b/c it found his service on Ebay, but didn't use Ebay.

There's a place in Charlotte NC that a friend of mine called and instead of them just telling him to send it down, they told him some things he could check first and he fixed it himself. I think their base price was real reasonable too. If anyone's interested I'll see if I can find out who it was.

I had a bad experience with Gene Taber. Had a thermal intermittent problem. Sent it three times to Gene. On the phone, he didn't seem to know how to troubleshoot thermal intermittents - I had to give him tips. I sent it 3 times, he had it a total of 3 months. As soon as I reinstalled it each time, the problem reappeared. It was apparent he kept focusing on the top board of the 2-board set inside the cluster. I finally bought a bottom board off another CF'er, and that solved the problem. Gene wouldn't refund the $195 - he said send it a 4th time.

I had Gene taber rebuild mine a few years ago, been working fine since, just have had a voltage too high issue, but I never sent it back to have him fix it (he offered to do it anytime within the warranty period), but I couldn't do without the vette.

I wonder if mine is going bad now though. It is flashing full on and off when the car is cold. After it warms up it does it very rarely. I'm not sure if it's the cluster or some ground somewhere, or whatnot..
