"A" to "B". The first code of "12" tells you the ECM is comunicating with the ALDL. All the others are in your service manual, along with the trouble shooting charts for each code. Give us your code(s), and maybe we can help. Just remember a code from a given sensor doesn't necessarily mean the SENSOR is bad. That's where the trouble shooting comes it.
These codes flash... <blink> short pause <blink><blink> = 12, it will be repeated 3 times, then the code, for example, 52 would be <blink><blink><blink><blink><blink> short pause <blink> <blink> long pause, repeat code.
That will repeat 5 times.
then code 12 will appear, and then the next code. If there is only 1 stored code, then it will appear next.
As CFI-EFI said, if you have a code, it does not mean the sensor is the problem. It could be any number of other issues. For example, you get an EGR code. That codes presentation is very important. If it comes on IMMEDIATELY after starting and stays on, the problem is with the EGR control, if it takes 20~30 minutes of driving, then it's the valve itself. You see, if it fires immediately, that means the control failed the self test.
then code 12 will appear, and then the next code. If there is only 1 stored code, then it will appear next.
Is it 5 times in later cars? Mine flashes the "12" three times. Then the first fault code, 3 times. After the first fault code has flashed 3 times, it moves on to the second fault code, if any. Et cetera. The "12" doesn't reappear until all the fault codes have been displayed, signaling "the end".

Just a thought!
EZ Link costs about $200 and besides pulling codes allows you to read real time data too!
I was having problems last fall and winter on my 88! Was running awfull but not throwing any codes
EZ link let me read the values to and from ECM and I isolated the problems.
Repairs/replacements were inexpensive and I easily recovered the cost of the EZ link with the money I saved from not just buying expensive parts and hoping they solved the problem!
