I was wondering what normal operating temps for oil and water are for an 86 vette. I just buaght it and think I'm having overheating problems. Its my first and I've only had it for two weeks. At speed it runs aruond 180 but at idle it got up to 210 and the fan didn't kick on I checked the fuses jumped the fan moter its good and put in a new relay and it still won't kick on at 210 and I won't run it hotter than that until I learn a little more about cooling temps. thanks George

Close... The main fan is controlled by the ECM. Itshould come on when the coolant temp reaches 226F or 108C. The aux. fan if you have one is controlled by the coolant fan temp switch and should turn on at 228F or 109C. This is spec. according to the 88 GM Factory Service Manual. The 86 should be the same.
Tip for checking the fans:
Setting the A/C to full on cold should build pressure in the A/C coolant fan switch which will open at 233 psi and send a signal to the ECM causing it to start the fans. If you turn on the A/C and the fans don't come on within a couple minutes (at any temp) you have a fan/switch problem. Otherwise any temp below 226 and GM doesn't bother to turn on the fans. You should be fine.
