This might be a harebrained scheme...but I was wondering if you could mount some high speed fans to your air intake at some point to increase the air going into the engine....or what if you could pull the air out as well. picture hooking a vaccum cleaner hose to the tailpipe to increase the flow out of the exhuast...would it work?

Ouch. That was harsh. Seriously, I used to ponder the same thing. I have since found, though, that there are others who have actually tried this sort of thing and the general consensus is that it doesn't do much. Yet.

How about a turbocharger or a supercharger? That's all I can think of.

You can't generate enough pressure with little fans to make a noticable power difference

Youre describing the basic idea of a Supercharger or Turbocharger.

Wasn't there a thread the other day about a lil' plastic hair dryer looking thing called an electric supercharger on ebay for like $150.00??
These low air moving things just dont work but are cute to ponder about.
I used to dream about a perpetual motion car. I figured I'd make a vehicle and strap a generator to each wheel that would charge batteries while rolling, to power an electric motor, along with solar panels on roof and hood that would be enough to get you rolling, then once you got rolling you would never run out of power. Seemed to work in theory...but not reality Nor do the cheap plastic superchargers/fan/tornado and other do-hickys. At this point in technology the only thing that yeilds true performance is wads of ca$h!!

Well you would need a fan that can move all the air your engine needs and do it at an increase over atmospheric pressure. So indeed you are in fact talking about an electrically powered supercharger.

As mentioned, someone tried this a while back and the size of the alternator to run the compressor was quite large. Plus you lose some efficiency in converting mechanical power (from the engine) to electrical and back to mechanical (to run the compressor).

You could connect DC motor to a supercharger and find out how much power it would take to drive it to provide say a 6psi boost to your SBC. But some small fans connected to the intake just ain't gonna get the job done.

Instead find a way to adapt an available turbo charger to your SBC for a real boost.

No such thing as cheap horsepower, just people who want to profit from selling to us that theory.

Sorry. There are no free lunches when it comes to power. There are cheap lunches like nitrous etc, but you will pay for it in the end, just like a cheap chineese lunch dish.

That isn't a "harebrained" idea. Supercharging and turbocharging have both been around for quite a while. You can even buy "kits" to add them to your car.

If you think a supercharger is big and or expensive, think what it would take to pull a vacuum on a blown engine twisting over 6000 rpms. Picture the fans for a wind tunnel. You would have to mount it on a trailer and pull it behind your race car. A hefty diesel engine ought to power it.

DREAM ON!!!
