Overdrive light not working right

I did the 4 + 3 overdrive bypass fix posted on this tech tips site and the overdrive is working perfectly, but the light isn't responding correctly. The light seems to come on whenever the upshift light comes on, and then also comes on when I switch the OD on, but it doesn't go off again until you go back into first again. My car is an 87 and the car in the tech tip piece was a late 85, both with the switch in the shift ****. Obviously there must be some difference in the wiring for the light.
Does anybody have any idea what might be different. I have the wiring diagrams, but I still can't figure out what actually activates the light. My fallback would be to disable the light altogether and put a lighted switch somewhere on the console. (It's on the shift **** now)
