Default Hurst Billet shifter install question

I'm installing the new billet shifter into my 95 coupe, I'm ready to re-connect the new shifter to the gear shift shaft.

When I removed the old shifter I noticed all around the top plate and top boot there was a very sticky glue / caulk like substance. It didn't completely seal the opening between the tunnel and the shifter housing and boot.

The question is: do I need to seal this opening and with what?

I just used Zip ties to seal everything with the boot. Mine was really messy here also so I didn't want to add anything else.

Are you talking about undercoating? The boots don't have anything on them as they are sealed with tie wraps. The hardest boot to reinstall was the upper boot that slips into the tunnel from above. The front part was tough to get at.

The top part of my boot had a sealent on it. It was also ziptied. It seemed really sloppy to me but I think it was factory. Looked to me like they were trying to seal the rubber shifter boot with the lower linkage boot together.

I was actually talking about the gap between the fiberglass tunnel and the whole shifter housing after the boots are re-installed. Hope this makes sense.

I just did a B&M install and mine is the same way. It is not necessary to do anything with it. I did not get an answer as to why it is there, but the local speed shop said that it will reseal itself once the car starts and gets hot. Plus, once everything is rebolted in place it helps seat it in place.

Please get back to me on how you like the Hurst. I was just about to buy one when I found a B&M in the marketplace. I'm sure it is a matter of personal preference, but the design of the B&M is totally different from the Hurst... and the Hurst is $80 cheaper!!!

Have fun with it!!!

Sorry, please forget this question. I forgot about the upper rubber boot that fits over the cover plate and seals between the tunnel and shifter housing.

But, thank you for your answers.

You are right in that it is a personal preference on Hurst vs B&M. But holding both in my hands and comparing told me the Hurst was better for me. It is still the best, or most fun mod I've put on my Vette.

I've driven cars with the Hurst and cars with the B&M, there is no contest, the Hurst is way better.
