I have an obvious, extremely annoying Squeeking and rattling in my '93 which has gotten progressively worse over the last year or so.
Looking at the targa top, I can see that the perimeter frame is loose with respect to the Acrylic. I can see that GM bonded the 2 and the bond joint is busted. Also, the squeeks go a way with the Targa removed.
I did a search here--one guy had this problem, but he did not re-post with a fix.
Any suggestions? I'm thinking take it to a glass place and have the acrylic removed entirely and re-bonded, or else have the Targe re-furbed.
Oh yes, top is certainly tight at 4 bolts used to remove roof. In fact, I played games with making these 4 looser or tighter to see if they had an effect. Result: too loose is worse, and after they are tight enough, making them tighter (whaling on the screws!!) doesn't help any.
apply felt stick on pads to the noisy areas and the noise will go away.
I tried some Velco pads where I could see rubbing might be occuring, near where the rear 2 bolts hook the Targa to the Roof. It didn't help at all.
Honestly, I can't tell where the noisy areas are. But it stands to reason, if I can push down on the top with my hand and hear the top make a noise (which I can), then it has got to be doing same during driving, as the Targa loads up. I don't see where I can put a pad down--the problem is internal to the Top I think, not between the top and the car.
That squeak is really anoying! I got a repair kit from Corvette America that consisted of 4 self adhesive pads. I put them on the 4 corners of the top and the noise went away.

M84,
Your 84 had the Targa acrylic piece delaminating(de-glued) from the Targa frame? Where did you put the 4 pads, between the top and the car or on the inside of the top only?
The top was not delaminating, it was a repair kit for the squeaks. The acrylic top was squeaking in the cars frame. The pads went on the top in the 4 corners where the bolts attached it to the frame, padding it where it sat in the frame.

I've had my vette for 3 years now and up until 3 weeks ago that annoying squeak and rattle was a daily occurence. Here is my fix and maybe it would work for your car too. I removed the halo peices from the vehicle. The plastic directly above and behind you. Then I removed the windshield trim and visors. I loosend the frame mounts for the top and the top to the frame mounts and went for a drive on a bumpy road to let the top find its nice home. I pulled over tightened the mounts to the car and the top to the mounts and went home and put my plastic peices back in. No more squeaky top. This is in the tech tip section as well and the writer did a nice job of covering the topic. This worked great for me so maybe this will help your problem. I tried those felt pads, I tried dynamat, and I even tried different ways of tightening the top all to no avail. If you happen to break the retainer clips holding the sun visors in place use some speed clips (the hardware that is left over from an aftermarket pair of speakers) they can be pushed back in place of the broken clips with a nut driver and hold the visor firmly in place. If you don't have any of those speed clips than go to a local car stereo installation place and ask them for a few. These guys always have extra! I broke both of my visor mounts and used two speed clips and they work like a charm!

So your Targa had Delamination(you can see white around the edges of the Targa frame/acrylic inteface, indicating the adhesive is gone) too? You could press on the top from outside the car and here something?
I will try all this maybe before buying a new top. But it seems that if what I am hearing is the rubbing of the Acrylic top on the Targe frame (not part of the car--part of the top--the top is the problem, not it's interface with the car), then it might not work.
I don't know. I guess I'll do everything and see what works.
I tried some other stuff I had--I think the super glue will be too stiff.
The other stuff didn't really work but I didn't put it on the outside because I don't want it visible from the exterior.
I think if I (or a pro) disassembles this thing, separates the Acrylic from it's frame, cleans out all the old adhesive, and then uses a factor-like adhesive (likely similar to windshield agent), then this would fix the problem.
I was just hoping that it was a common problem and that there would be agreement here. But I am open to trying other fixes first.
