Hi I am new this forum so be kind. My 1985 with standard transmission, with about 95,000 miles on it. While traveling at about 65 mph it JUST QUIT running. It back fired about 6 times and blew lots of black smoke out the exhaust before I took it out of gear and coasted to a stop. It will crank over but not fire, checked for spark... none. Cap, rotor, wires and plugs are all new a few months ago.... No fuses blown, tested the coil and the pickup coil in the distributor both seam to be OK. Checked all the connectors to the dist. Replaced the ignition module but still no spark! I was 150 miles from home and had to flat bed it home.... Anybody got an ideas?? Thanks.
It seems like an ignition problem. You say it backfired and was letting out black smoke. To me, that means you were getting fuel. Make sure you have 12 volts dc at the cap. Inside you'll see some wiring. These cars are getting old now and the wiring could be failing and shorting to ground. I replaced my pickup coil just recently, and it fell into my hands in pieces. If you are having trouble isolating the trouble, borrowing a known good distributor is do-able.
Check the rotor to see if it has a pinhole in the center or a burnt spot. Electricity will take the shortest path, the distributor shaft to ground. Ron B.
