Got an '87 used for Auto Cross and Track Days. This weekend at CMP it appears the OD unit lost fluid. I did not intend to use the OD during the events but did notice it would not engage.
My Question is what happens if the OD unit quits working, will the 4 speed continue to work or will it eventually lock up the due to the OD unit. Basically need to know if I am going to need to replace the 4+3 with a 6spd since I would not repair the OD unit.

Generally what happens is it locks in reverse! I had both fluids mix in my 84 4+3 and the OD didn't like it much...it started whining (carrier bearing) and no matter what gear I was in...it would hang and grind...the whine would go away when the OD kicked for a minute...but it was not long for this world...oh, it would not dis-engage from some gears either...it was bad! I ended up putting in a 96 ZF6 due to the rebuild of the OD being $1500 + core charge...
the later OD's were supposed to be better...but not better then the ZF6!
