l after pulling out the dual mass fly wheel l found that the surface is in very good condition, and l belive still OK to use, but the local clutch specialist (who has never see one out of a corvette)told me that the rubber diaphragm between the two masses has too much movement, when laying flat you can twist it with both hands if you try and it will move about .25 of an inch and then locks up.

There is such a thing as too much movement but I won't have access to my service manual until Saturday. I am sure someone else here will probably be able to help you out before then.
I had a dual mass that "clicked" when hot and made a ratcheting noise when I shut the motor off. When I had the gearbox out while doing the conversion I held one side of the dual mass and rotated it. At the end of the play between the two halves it clicked. To my reckoning this meant the FW was finished. Was your gearbox making any funny noises before you did the conversion?

The movement to be bad is around 1 3/8" (forget the actual #)from turn to turn. If you only have 1/4" play going in each direction for 1/2" total it is still good.
