Default Head gasket question/recommendation

I am doing some work to my 84-L83 and I am searching for some head gaskets that have a compression thickness of about 0.030 and I have not been able to find any. The heads are alum AFR 180s 68 cc chambers. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

I think it is Conteco, or some name very similar to that, that offers a variety of thicknesses. But for the cost of their gaskets, you might be better off to have your block decked. Once ($150.00-$175.00) is bad enough, but if you ever have to redo the head gaskets, you'll wish you had done something different.

Ouch.......

I am trying to keep the quench distance down but at that cost maybe I will just wait and go with some fel-pro's. I did find some felpros (1094) with a thinckness of 0.015 but that is too thin for my liking. I will measure the deck height when I pull the heads and who knows maybe I will get lucky. But you are right - decking the block is the way to go.

If the engine is previously untouched, it should be between .025" and .030", piston to deck. You want to shoot for .035" to .040" piston to head clearance. By the way, the "L83" part has nothing to do with it. Underneath that goofy manifold, is just another, Gen I sbc.

The block has been untouched as far as I can tell. In order to meet that quench distance (0.04) then the gasket would need to be about 0.015 which is thin. Assuming the piston to deck is 0.025. Am I missing something?

I think you are right. There is a co. similar in name to Conteco, also, but I believe Cometic is the co. I was referring to.

NO! You're not missing a thing. If that gasket is rated for an iron block/aluminum head combination, that will get you close, depending on your current deck clearance. I am only familiar with the .039"-.041" Fel-Pro's.

vetster86 - Do you know if they are usable on aluminum heads? I have sent them both emails requesting info. Thanks.........

I have seen thin copper shim type head gaskets. Is it advisable to use a copper shim type with another thin head gasket to get the proper compressed thickness?

Try Mr Gasket (MRG1134). They are 0.028" thick composite head gaskets suitable for ally and iron heads. I got mine from Summit they were about $40 a pair. TPiS also do their own made specially for them for a similar price if I remember also.

TPIS are Corteco, I just installed a pair, $49.00 + shipping.

Theirs stuff appears to be pretty good sh..t. :-).

They also returned my email & phone inquiry to component suitability & stability questions. Said a lot to me about their customer service & confidence.

Corteco is the title sponsor for the NSCA. They're a good company. Cometic also makes a quality product.
