I replaced the bushings in my headlight today. It was working fine for a while. I went to reinstall everything and tested it with no problems.
I noticed I forgot to reinstall the support bracket between the motor and the hood mount (where the extra, small hood support goes.) So I turned the headlight a little to get it installed. after that, started the car and tried it again now it opens but it keeps trying to turn causing the headlight to hop 3 or 4 times on the stopper. Same thing when it closes.
What's wrong? Ugh, I'm afraid I broke one of the bushings broke inside. I don't want to take it all apart again.
Does yours have the three nylon bushings per headlight? I used the ones from home depot and they actually got crushed in just a few days. Apparently the walls are not thick enough. I know some people swear by these bushings, but my car (90 conv.) must have high performance motors!!! Anyway I got some thicker ones from Lowe's and they were a little bit too long so I trimmed off a little bit and they have been going good for a couple months now. Seems to me the Ecklers set with the brass gear are solid from the picture but I haven't seen any like that for sale (just the bushings). I sent a forum member some photos of the bad bushings and IF I still have them will send them to you if you want confirmation of MY experience.
You're gonna' have to open it back up again. Sorry, but your repair mistake has obviously damaged the internals of your headlight motor. Bushings? Gear? Can't say. Only a visual inspection will confirm.
And, FTR, my Home Depot bushings have been going strong since I replaced them in early summer. I've even flipped my lights up and down repeatedly in a stress test designed to distort/break them and I'm still wavy gravy on lights.

Hmm, why was it working fine for 15 or so flips and then now not? Sounds more like a broken bushing than a repair mistake. I know i'll have to replace them, but i think I'll go to Lowes this time.

Either way, you'll still have to open it all back up to fix. That's what I mean. Sorry for your luck...
Yeah, I figured that's what I'd have to do. I guess I'll just go ahead and do both this time. It shouldn't be bad after the first time, now that I know how. Thanks!
Okay, stayed up until 2:00am finishing both headlights. Really not hard once you know how to do it.
Some idiot had previously done the other headlight and used plastic valvestem caps with a cut off bolt inside as the bushings. Needless to say it didn't look to good in there.
Ah, what idiot's the previous owners were.... but that's another thread.
I rebuil mine with the Home Depot bushings and crushed them the 2nd time up. Went on Ebay and bought the kit. Will have to look into this Lowes part # since I have 3 sets of headlight motors laying here.
