Default Aluminum Valve Covers...

Are aluminum valve covers the best way to go for lowering valve train noise? Also will tall valve covers work on my 86 with iron heads? I am using Hooker 2149s with the newer C4 EGR Tube. Please let me know. I am told that my valve train is noisy due to my Eldebrock chrome STEEL valve covers. Thanks!

Your signature, with mods, and your post, make no mention of your changing the cam or any of the valve train. If the stock cam, or any hydraulic cam is excessively noisy, it would make more sense to CURE the problem, rather than mask it. Usually too much noise indicates a problem that is likely to cause accelerated wear and eventual, early, failure. Sticking your head in the sand, ISN'T the way to go. To answer your question, thicker, cast covers, will help muffle the noise better than the thin stamped steel covers. Tall covers will fit the heads, just fine. You may have to reroute some hoses, like that EGR tube, or make some adjustments to some brackets.

I have not changed the heads or valve train at all, and the cam is stock to my knowledge. I have a new engine, only 13k tops on the motor. The heads were not rebuilt. I have a new shortblock 355.

The stock cam, lifters, and rocker arms should sound stock, like it did before the changes. My suggestion would be to adjust the preload of the lifters to get rid of the noise. If that doesn't help, I'd be looking for the cause of the noise.

I agree with the above....and add that some have had clearance issues with tall valve-covers.
