Your advice please...On my son's 84 would this squeaking be from the brake pads, an out of round rotor or is there another possibility?
How to tell if the pads need to be replaced without removing them?
Thanks
There is a small metal arm on the brake pad that contacts the disc when the pad is worn down far enough. This is a reminder that the pads need replacing. Both front wheel pads should be replaced . If you pull the front wheel, you can look at the edge of the brake pads and see the thickness of the linings to confirm that the squeek is due to worn pads.
If it is rattling, the spring/clip that holds the pads to the bracket is gone, and that causes a whole hell of a lot of noise! Don't think you can buy just the spring, so just get new pads anyways.
The brake pads squeaking is caused by it being loose or needing replacement.
If it is loose chances are that the spring clip needs to be replaced. To check the brakes you mest remove one wheel. You look into the caliper which allows you to see the side of the pad. There are also breake wear clips on the pads which will strike the rotor when the pad needs to be replaced and this also causes a squealing. When the brake pads are replaced, it is done by the axle, or both sides at a time.
