i have the cloyes double roller timing gear- anyway i am trying to get it put on my 92 lt1. here is the problem
the factory setup has 3 gears- small, large, and one for waterpump- ok i bought an electric waterpump so that solves the problem with the 2 gears that the cloye has.
on the large gear of the factory one - in the center there is a threaded spot where i believe a bolt connects to the cool pack.
on the cloyes there isnt anyway to connect this.
Is this just a problem with the 92lt1 ? or am i missing something
I don't believe you use the middle gear anymore. Someone else will chime in I'm sure... but, I believe the waterpump gear get's pulled out and you only use the two Cloyes gears.
i wish i had pictures so i could show what i was talking about-
the big gear on the cloyes has a hole in the center about 3/4 an in in diameter. the factory one has a spot where a bolt screws into it at the same spot. this then connects to something else
On my 94 I had to upgrade to a 95 newer timing cover and opti to use my gearset (dynagear or dynatech). Not sure what you mean by coolpack though?!? the waterpump gear I just tapped out of the block and disgarded.

I'm not positive, but I think to use a Cloyes with the early LT1 you have to convert to the later front cover and opti. Doesn't the early opti have some type of drive that bolts to the cam gear? The later one uses a longer cam pin that sticks through the gear to drive the opti. My '95 is the only one I've had experience with. Enlighten us, someone!
In the center of the large gear which attaches to the cam with three bolts is a splined hole. This is where the Optispark is driven from. There is a sort of "keyway" that only allows the opti to go in one way.
It doesn't sound like the new timing set is going to work if it doesn't have that opti drive setup.
I just finished putting my timing cover back on last night in my 92 LT1.
I'm doing the change to the dynaspark and the electric water pump.
