Harmonic Balancer?
This can be checked by visually inspecting, to see if the outer ring has moved in or out.
If that checks out OK, find TDC by using a (through the plug hole) TDC stop. After locating TDC, check to see if the line on the balancer lines up with TDC on the timing tab. (assuming the correct timing tab is being used) If it doesn't, it slipped and must be replaced.
Another thing that happens, a groove is cut into the balancer, where it passes through the timing cover seal. They sell a sleeve to repair this, although IMHO, you'd be better off replacing it.
