Timing gears are the most accurate way to time the cam, HOWEVER, the gear drives fool the knock sensor into thinking it hears pinging and will pull timing out. Definitely not what you want. A good double roller set will last a good long time on the street.

Leave the gears for the racetrack/dragstrip crowd only. Not what is needed on the street.

Thats a good point mash557. I didn't think about that. But I thought you couldn't run a double timing chain with a roller cam? True?

that makes me quite sad.....i had my heart set on a gear drive (mostly for the sound, but the accuracy would be a pretty good benefit also!) now i have to settle for a chain? how about the "quiet" gear drives? are they the same as the noisy ones?

Hey guys, I just went through this decision process. I ended up selecting a Summit Racing double roller chain with torrington bearing for my '86. Works great and my TCI was about $85.

I don't know for sure why, but the makers of the timing gear sets usually say "not for use with cars equiped with factory roller cam" anybody know why?
