I rebuilt my 700r4 and everything was working fine for 3 days. On the third day I drove a little farther about 30 miles on the highway and checked the fuild to make sure it was still full, but I noticed that burning smell to it. I drove home and started to have shifting problems, such as I couldnt get out of first gear, I pulled over and got towed home. The fuild isnt black but it has the burning smell to it. I am wondering if my cooling system is clogged. I know the details are limited but would you guys come to the same idea, after it worked flawless, I didnt ever take it on the highway but I did put a few miles on it driving around my area.
My guess is burned clutch discs. Bands are pretty stout and much easier and cheaper to replace. It is easy to break one of the steel sealing rings or to not get a rubber ring in correctly. You got the bad luck IMO and yes it sucks.
I replaced all packings, steel, and friction plates. It is possible I messed up on the packing but would it work fine and then burn the fuild. I also replaced the 2-4 band.
Yes if it was done wrong somehow it would probably work awhile but would be slipping and destroying the friction discs. IF clutch packs put together correctly then I think it very well could be a pressure related problem. That is why I mentioned the steel and rubber seals. The steel ones can snap in two during assembly and you can't always tell you did it and the rubber type can pop out of their grooves and you also might not notice it either. We need some of the real transmission people to chime in here! Could there be a broken ring on the input shaft causing a main pump pressure problem?
I am looking at my service manual and it says the forward clutch is applied in ALL forward gear positions. It is not applied for reverse. The forward sprag is holding in all forward gears except D4 (overdrive). Does your car drive in reverse? In reverse 2-4 band, overrun clutch, forward clutch, 3-4 clutch, Low roller clutch are NOT applied and forward sprag is NOT holding, the reverse input clutch and Low-Reverse clutch ARE applied. Perhaps this will help diagnose?

I just had a brainstorm. I assume the TV cable is properly adjusted but also is it possible the filter popped loose? Just thinking it could just be sucking a lot of air if it did.
Yes it is my first. Yes I do have reverse, and I feel very confident if I do a fluid change I will get everything working properly again until the fluid burns up again. I've read over my manual a dozen times and I cant come up with anything. Except a cooling problem, but this is my first and I do not have a alot of expirence with transmissions or the workings. I do appericate the help and please keep it coming.
OK, I really really doubt your fluid is burning unless the torque converter is bad. The smell you have is more likely to be clutch or band material. Something is slipping and we need to figure out what. IF reverse seems to work ok (maybe you have not driven it backwards enough to find out it starts slipping too), we can assume there is good line pressure to properlly engage clutches and bands. The forward clutch is common to all forward gears, that is what I think it is. Not good news so let's hope others help out here. I am not an expert.
I had a stuck valve in mine-would wind out in 1st for ever then shift hard-tranny guy just took a hammer and tapped the tranny-wow, been great ever since-then I had the fluid changed-but I didn't have the burning smell.
I have the Hanes manual. I am going to do a flush on it this weekend and run some compressed air thur the cooling lines to see if there's a clog or a pressure differance. I just hope it's not the Fwd. Clutch, I really do not want to drop the Trans again and go thru that whole thing again.

so where did he hit it with the hammer? my valve sticks too but only when I am getting on it so it doesnt effect normal driving. if I am getting on it I let off the gas a little then get back on it and it goes right into second no problem. I have a shift kit for it just havent had the time and money to get it in. I was told that would fix the problem too.
