Is there a torque spec for installing the carrier to the batwing? I didn't see one in my service manual. Also I never have any luck using silcone to seal anything (beween batwing & carrier) could I make a gasket for it?
You must not have a Helms. "Differential Carrier To Cover Bolts...27-34 N-m...20-25 Ft. Lbs." Dana doesn't make a gasket. Therefore Chevy can't offer it. If you would rather have something in there, you could make one.
Interesting. My book doesn't show a tightening sequence, but I would have used something similar, to achieve the same effect. The torque spec difference, by model, is interesting, too, because for either axle you have M8 bolts threaded into aluminum. Thanks for the link.

At some point, the size of the bolts for the control arm brackets changed from 10 to 12 mm. This is probably when the torque spec changed. I'm swapping in a 44 right now and although it's from an '85, I used the later spec. After torquing, I removed those four bolts and drilled the holes out as needed. Note that only the lower bracket bolt on each side is involved in the initial torque sequence.
Thanks guys for the help. The first time I installed the carrier I snapped the ears off the carrier tightening the strut rod bolts. Apperently the carrier case was different and the bolts bottomed out and broke the case. Now i'm getting the3:07s switched into my old carrier and shouldn't have a problem. Now i'll torque everything instead of just tightening away!
