I found myself watching an infommercial the other night (isn't it funny how you will spend far too much time watching a paid advertisement for something you will never purchase)...they were selling the fabulous Tornado air intake enhancer; a small metal ring with angled fins that inserts into the accordion hose. The idea is the air will hit the fins and being to spiral (i.e. Tornado).
They put this little device on a BMW, dyno'd it with and without...supposedly a 20 hp gain.
I'm not sure if anyone else wasted any time watching this but it seems the vortex would loose all of its effectiveness while moving through the plenum/runners/manifold.
Any thoughts?
P.S. They were selling it for roughly $75! One of the supposed testimonials was from a middle-aged surfer driving a white C4...he claimed it has improved his gas mileage as well as adding "all sorts of power."
They use to sell something like this for the Buick GN's.. the idea was to start the air spinning before it reached the impeller of the turbo, which would reduce turbo-lag. In that situation, it may of helped, but I never tried one.
This idea is almost as old as the automobile. Stretching my already overtaxed memory, this idea was the secret behind the 100 MPG carb GM was testing shortly after WWII. Built by a guy from Canada by the name of Phogue(sp). Did not work then and will not work now. BTW the reason given for the failure by GM to put the 100 MPG carb into production was pressure from the major oil companies.
I heard of the 100mpg carb but I heard it was 200mpg, however the story goes. If 100mpg from a carb then imagine what they could get out of an EFI!
All seems hard to swallow.
Ever hear of the car that runs on water?
I have seen a bulb Edison invented that was still burning, I think GE has got that one.
I posted a similar thread several months ago and the average input seemed to be negative. The infomercial works, though...makes the device sound effective!! Never bought one, so I can't say firsthand, but thought I'd pass on what I was told.
