These questions apply to my 88.

Does anyone make direct bolt in headers that are good performance gainers?

Will the pre cats have to come off to install headers?

Will aftermarket headers have the fitting for the o2 sensors in them?

Do the pre cats always have to come off?

Hooker model 2149HKR are listed to fit, but then they say wont fit angle plug heads. Are my 88 heads angle plug? What gives?

I am looking for headers that will have some performance gain, look good, and easy to install. Any suggestions? Anyone have a personal preference here? I know this is asking a lot but most of you guys have been through this and know what works.

Thanks in advance.

I would totally recommend LPE ceramic coated headers. They're ceramic coated and come with a y-pipe. Not cheap but worth every penny.

The package will replace your existing y-pipe and eliminate the pre-cats. Yes they include an O2 sensor mount and air pump tubes.

Your 88 heads are ALU angle plug. The only down side of the 1 3/4" LPE headers I have: Getting at the plugs is a pain but you don't get something for nothing!

I had the LPE 1 3/4 long tubes on my 90. They fit great. No complaints here. The plugs aren't that bad to do either. You just need an open end wrench instead of a ratchet. And you will have to remove #8 plug from the bottom. But you can do a plug change in well under 30 mins with them.

The coating is pretty nice on them as well. I have heard other complaining about the coating flaking off, but I never had a problem. But I do know the hookers that you are talking about are a great piece as well. And they will definitaly fit your car. Check out internet racers supply on the web. Great site to get pics and ideas/part numbers from.

My car uses the stock tubular headers. It sounds awesome like it is. Of course my motor may have something to do with that. I would spend my money in other areas if I were you.

I believe that the Hooker footnote says they will not fit with the AFR angle plug heads, not the stock angle plugs...
I have them on my LT1 and I love them!

I have the hookers with AFR "Straight" angle plugs. A had to "dimple" 2 of the tubes for plug clearance. According to hooker and AFR, "L98 angle" heads will fit with no dimpling. Pre cats go bye bye. The have a fitting for the O2 sensor in one of the pipes. I think that kinda sucks because that one cylinder may be diferent than the average for the engine. So, I bought a heated O2 sensor and had a muffler guy weld a fitting for it in the "y-pipe" just before the cat. He charged me $15.

I had to take the cross braces off to put the headers on. Also had to grind the corner off the passenger side one so it didnt touch. I also had to remove the heat shield off the the hydrolic unit for the clutch.

Between the starter, several wires, and the hydro clutch part, I am going to have to do some creative heat shielding...

L98 long tubes: LPE, TPIS, Hooker 2149, Hedman.
After that, it's all opinion. I've heard good and bad about all of them. The stock tubes only open to about 1.3" and the bends are awful.

87ZZ4 - Did you dyno 335 rwhp with the stock tubes?
