The runners and plenum aren't gonna give you too much alone....what you need is an intake manifold. Thats supposed to be the real bottle-neck. From what I understand, the stocker can't really be ported enough; too small, too thin. JMHO
Unless you make your engine a 383 cubic inch or larger, you wont see or even feel anything with a larger TB.I tried the 58,the 52 and went back to the stock 48.The stock 48 TB had the best throttle response and power on a slightly modified stock engine.Dont waste your money until you get a much larger cube engine under the hood.
You won't likely see any real gains from going to a 52mm TB. Indeed you can't port the TPI runners as they are too thin, except at the base on either end. You can flute the upper runner base and match the plenum to it, rolling the plenum openings to optomize air flow into the runners. On the lower end, if you siamese the base, cut into the runner base a little so you can form a taper into the mateing siamese holes in the base. On the input into the plenum you can cut back the input walls a little, remove the bottom ridges and lower the center hump.
If you have a L98 and decide to go with a 52mm TB, make it an AS&M as it is a quality piece. Since I gutted my MAF out to flow to 750cfm I decided to take it all the way and added a 52mm TB and ported the plenum to match.
