I’m cruzing down a two lane road today looking for a place to turn around, so I pull off to this small patch of gravel and dirt, not much room to turn around, no big deal ill just swing the back around so im facing 180 degrees the other direction, and all goes fine until I steep on the brakes to keep from rolling back into the road (at this point im traveling strait not sideways at all) and the brake pedal is pulsating like crazy, and the car will not STOP.
Luckily it stopped just in the nick of time, but I cant figure this out, im standing on the pedal, and the car just will not stop im thinking it has something to do with the rear tires still spinning or something, but at this point im rolling in a strait line not accelerating.
Anyway, this experience has completely turned me off of ABS. Can I yank the fuse or disconect the ABS unit behind my seat with no ill effects?
Remove the fuse, but be aware that on slippery roads your ABS will allow you to steer and decelerate at the maximum possible. Something you can't do with your foot.

Thanx for the reply, but if its something as simple as a fuse I can remove and install it at will. Very simple. Ill check the factory service manual for the location of the fuse.
i think if you were on gravel that you would be sliding even without the abs on. i'd go somewhere safe and test it before i just disconnnected it. when my abs relay was bad, and it was only a week before i fixed it, i was in an emergency stop situation where i locked up the wheels. i can only think of two occasions on the street where the abs has kicked in, and after the one where they didn;t i'm sure i wouldn't have the car today if it wasn't for the abs!

I've got four very good reasons why you shouldn't disable the ABS. They're called flat spots and I have one on each of my 5,000 mile Bridgstones. With ABS they wouldn't be there. There also wouldn't be a C5 driver that had to clean his driver's seat....
When you stop and the ABS sense slip, its going to pulsate the pedal alot to prevent lock up and slowly stop the car..this is far better then sliding 100 feet more...
when youre on gravel, and the abs kicks in, it feels like a long time to stop but it allowed more control to stop...with no abs you wouldve locked the wheels on the gravel and kept sliding more.
I hate driving on gravel and try to avoid every chance I get...its very tricky to stop on with or without ABS systems.
If you really want to go back to standard brakes, pull the fuse..but the abs light will stay on...when my abs went bad, I pulled the fuse to stop the intermittent on and off it was doing, and then later I pulled the light bulb out of the dash display.
Ive since fixed the problem and reinstalled bulb and fuse...I feel alot safe with abs working now.
Ya never know when it might needed.

Many good points have been made. Ill try it with out ABS for about a month and see how I like it. The gravel in question is very small less than a quarter inch in diameter. I’m not to worried about driving on it at the time because my car needs paint.
I was sure I could perform this maneuver that’s why I attempted it, but was totally caught off guard by the ABS. I know for a fact that if I had had a non-ABS car it would have been a flawless happening.

My Blazer doesn't have ABS, never has. You get real good at wet braking when you have to pump yourself. I would rather not have it, then have to worry about it dying while in a panic situation.
I'm amazed at how much you guys dislike ASR, but how entranced you are by ABS.

Romeo, thanx for the offer, but for now I think ill keep my ABS, but just disable it for the time being. Its nice have the option to bring it back at will.
saw an interview with Jackie Stewart, and he mentioned that he wouldn't drive an everyday car that didn't have ABS- when he changes his mind, so will I
You are all insane if you think you can outbrake ABS manually. MotorTrend can't even come close and driving is their life. I don't mean to offend anybody but you aren't gonna compensate faster than the computer. You may do alright in controlled conditions but the one time you aren't expecting it you're gonna pay for it.
About the ABS and ASR?? Completely different. There isn't a person here who has said that the ASR hasn't done it's job perfectly in bad weather. It can save your A$$ but is far less critical than the ABS. Use common sense and you don't need ASR, ABS if for the completely unplanned.
