Default How to maximize my dyno pulls?

Next weekend, I will be dynoing my car with some fellow CF members. This will be my first time on a dyno, so I wanna know what, if anything, I can do to really get the best out of my 3 pulls. I had my oil changed recently along with the fuel filter, so that's pretty much set. I am going to order an open lid for my K&N to get any extra I can out of that, but otherwise, I don't know what else I can do.

Is there an "art" to this at all, or is it pretty much just, "your car pulls what it pulls..." Certainly for 1/4mi. runs there's things you can do (lighten the car, sticky tires, etc.), so I guess I have just been wondering if there's anything similar with respect to the dyno.

Thanks in advance!

well i wouldn't recommend this anywhere but a dyno , which is usually in a enclosed bld. with controlled enviroment. But you could just take the air filter and lid off for the pull. Also make sure the car is cool for the run 160 deg.

You could take your accessory belt off, but why try to get a "higher hp number" by making artificial changes that don't represent how you drive the car. Also, FWIW, a buddy of mine spent a lot of money and a lot of time on a dyno doing tuning work to get max hp. He went to the track and ran slower. Stuck his old (lower hp) chip back in a ran fast again.

Throw the dyno operator a $50 bill and tell him to lie!

Try to blow the crud off the valves before going on the dynojet, really lay into it once or twice on the way there.

Other than that, I would just try to get the temperatures to standard operating temp.

Seems like the real purpose of a dyno test is to evaluate where you are power wise and also to compare different mods or tuning schemes......

To maximize dyno output you need to do anything that either makes the motor run better or reduces drive train losses.

So you could ice the intake....recent car mag tests showed some incredible dyno result by doing this....

If you just want to make bigger numbers that don't really mean much I would think you could get a bigger number by reversing your front & rear tires/wheels, assuming your front tires/wheels are smaller & lighter than your rears..

Interesting question......maximizing dyno results as you suggest is really no different than maximizing track times with tricks that you could never really do on the street....

General consensus from different sources all seem to agree that no matter what, dyno numbers don't mean it will work well on the street.

WHat they all said was to use the same dyno each time you need to so that everything remains consistent.

You don't want to dyno on a Dynojet and a month later on a Mustang. You will get different results regardless of any changes.

Use the numbers you get to compare yourself to yourself and not anybody else.

And at the end of the day, dyno numbers don't directly corrolate into wins at the track. So many other factors go into getting the best ET from a combination.

I view the dyno as a tuning aid, not a braggin right.

Excellent replies, everybody... I definitely wasn't talking about taking off the accessory belt or removing the air filter altogether (although those are slick tricks) - basically just wanted to know if there were any do's or don'ts, what operating temps are best, etc., which you all have seemed to post! Thanks again!

My car seems to ET best at 160 and when I dyno'd that was their target temps.
